30-day Shake Journey

Sharing My Shake

It’s a little bit late for me to announce this now, but I have decided to use the 30 days of June to record a 30-day Shake Journey. I decided I wanted to do it for these few reasons:

Personal Challenge

Many years ago, I acquired a habit of hiding because I perceived that people around me weren’t able to give me the support that I needed. What I have learnt since then is that I can support myself even if the journey is scary as heck, and it is important to affirm that by stepping out of my figurative cave.

Intensive clearing

I have been consciously working on my old trauma for years now, finding what works well and since 2017 when I first learnt TRE® and did it 5 minutes a day for a month, I haven’t done another intensive period like that and I want to see where I can bring myself now given what I know and how much I have grown in my trust of my system and my journey.

To encourage others to live well

Everyone has trauma of some kind; trauma is not something we should try to put on a comparison scale. What a person has experienced as traumatic to them is exactly that and I want this to be my way of saying that “it’s ok to do what you need to for healing yourself because you deserve to live well and whole and happy.”

To Share Joy

Though, for me, TRE® often brings up uncomfortable feelings or painful memories, I also experience a poignant joy inside because in the process of uncovering what has been suppressed, I feel taken care of. I want my life to show that working through old things that hold us back and keep us small is worth it and can be, absolutely, moment to moment, totally and intensely beautiful.

If you are interested to be part of my journey and to see how it shapes up as the weeks go along, please do follow my series here on our TRE4Life Facebook page.  This first week I’m going rather organic – just tuning in to what comes up and seeing what my body is wanting to process from day to day – but that might change as I start experimenting with different interventions or as I receive requests from friends or viewers or happenstance!

Starting Your TRE Journey

Making the most of TRE® once you’ve learned it

Once you’ve had a session to learn the basics of TRE® – the exercises, how to access your tremor, how to stop tremoring, remembering to integrate the work done – then the next thing you would want to do would be to learn how to develop your practice so that it becomes more effective for you over time. Some beginners, having acquired the basics and experienced the tremor in their legs (these larger muscle groups are easier to activate and so an easy access point to begin the journey) think: Oh, that’s all there is to it!

While TRE® can still work to help you discharge stress when used that way, giving yourself time to find out how to get the tremors going in other parts of your body can help with releasing tension being held in other areas of the body. This, of course, can support the relieving of pain in more parts of the body since we store stress everywhere and often in the upper parts of the body – working long hours at the computer gives me a lot of neck and shoulder stress, not to mention jaw stress when I’ve been clenching my teeth a lot due to frustration.

In fact, on one of the Facebook Live videos I’ve done recently, jaw tension definitely showed up during my shake to be worked through, which was hilarious because I was simultaneously trying to articulate what was happening in my shake. A tremoring jaw and talking are not a complementary combination! To counter my insistence on preventing the tremor in my jaw so I could talk, my TRE® mechanism had me yawning throughout the session so that those tense muscles in my jaw could get the stretch they needed. The shake will find a way to get the job – or in my case, the jaw – done!

Anyhow, here are some questions you might have as a beginner on the TRE® journey, and I will do my best to address them as objectively as possible. As with all these posts that have to do with answering questions, if there are any questions you have which I haven’t addressed, please do give me feedback and I will make sure I plan and do a post to address them.

How many sessions do I need to learn TRE®?

For the basics, one session can be enough.

The exercises which help you access your tremor are simple and easy to remember. If you need, there are some providers and trainers who have put up videos of the exercises, even variations of them, so that you can follow these if you need more repetitions to be able to do them all unguided.

What’s the point of attending a series with a group?

To feel safe as you explore and become confident, for positive affirmation on a new journey, for expanding your ideas of what is possible and for limbic resonance.

In a nutshell, the more comfortable and confident you are with practicing TRE®, the more you’ll be able to trust and relax into the process each time you practice. The more relaxed you are, the more your body is able to induce the tremors it needs in order that you can have more effective tension release. For growing that comfort and that confidence, having a season with a group is a way to get monitored shakes with a certified TRE® Provider who is trained to keep you safe as well as to support your familiarity with how to use interventions at a much more affordable rate than having 1-on-1 sessions.

A main purpose of these sessions is to have a safe space to explore and experiment with this new modality and to get help, if you need to, if something about your experience puzzles you in the process. For many who are new to TRE®, simply experiencing how their bodies can and want to move is an education in itself, and it is always important for us to be with positively affirming groups who can share the wonder of the adventure with us. The more positive reinforcement we have through positive experiences, through being reassured that however weird our tremors are as they emerge that they are also wonderful, the more confident and willing we can become to exploring where else we can take ourselves with TRE®.

Another benefit of attending groups is that there is an opportunity for people who practice together to observe each other’s shakes. In the community, we speak jokingly about the idea of ‘shake envy’ where observing a kind of tremor someone else has makes us want to have an experience of that kind of tremor ourselves. I once provided a session for a beginner who, on her second TRE® session, told me that she experienced a tremor in her eyes because she could feel how her pupils were rapidly dilating and contracting! Man, but did I have a huge dose of shake envy that day! We can experience tremors all over, wherever we store tension, wherever there is tissue to respond, and tremors can take on all kinds of magnitudes, intensities and movements. Sometimes all that keeps us from accessing tremors that are different from ‘usual’ is to observe that it is possible for someone else because the recognition that it can be done is an effective key to help us open our minds and to become aware that we have been subconsciously holding back from allowing a tremor because we thought it couldn’t or even shouldn’t be done a particular way.

What can sometimes happen in a group that is exciting is when there’s limbic resonance. It’s hard to have that happen all by yourself; you’ll need to be practicing with at least one other person for that to have a chance of happening. The more familiar a group is with shaking regularly together and the more openness and trust develops in a group, the more it stands a chance of happening that the members of the group finds that certain movements they experience are similar or perhaps a certain emotion emerges for everyone during a session. Even without that, the pre- and post- session sharing can create a lot of resonance and a great feeling of camaraderie and companionship – we all come together because we want to be well, to release pent up stress, to cope with situations, to heal… – and knowing that we are not alone can be augment our emotional resources tremendously.

So, what’s the point of 1-to-1 sessions with a provider?

More personalised support, especially for those who already acknowledge that they have something they would like to work through more intensely with TRE®.

The deeper the journey we have the intention to explore, the more our systems need for us to feel safe so that we can find the courage within ourselves to do what might be very intimidating or challenging to some parts of our psyche. Those who have residual or unresolved trauma from childhood or incidents earlier in their lives can sometimes find their TRE® journeys to have a particular intensity in the way the tremors emerge or the kinds of emotions that they experience before, during or after a shake, or, in some cases, survival responses can also show up which might lead to feelings of being overwhelmed. In such cases, to have our journeys witnessed by a caring, non-judgemental observer who is able to help us feel more safe because we know that their primary reason for being there is to focus on us and to remind us that we are safe can be invaluable. It can help us access the great amount of courage that we need to be open to allowing these sometimes scary  or painful parts of our psyches to emerge to be seen, addressed and healed.

For most, simply knowing you’re tremoring as part of a group can be an intervention in itself. When we consciously know that we have to share the attention of the provider, we automatically self-regulate. However, there are some people who have a much stronger reaction to the TRE® process and, for these in particular, to have a period of personalised attention is more necessary.

If I do TRE® with a group, do I still need to make time to do TRE® on my own?

Personal preference rules the day; an awareness of ‘public’ versus ‘private’ space might create different experiences.

Of course, a benefit of attending a regular group is that there is already a regular interval that you’re practicing TRE®, so you don’t have to do solo practice unless you want to. Many, once they become familiar with TRE® and how using it works for them, sometimes choose to also have times when they do TRE® alone:

  • We are usually different people when we are with a group to when we are by ourselves, no matter how much trust and bonding we may feel with the group in question. For this reason, some people find it beneficial to make time to have a group practice and to do a solo practice regularly so that they can reap the benefits of both.
  • Some find that more frequent practice of TRE® is more supportive for where they are, so a regular group provides a baseline stable practice and they fit in another solo practice mid-way to take care of discharging stress that has built up by the mid-week interval.
  • It is also a benefit of TRE® that, really, that all we need is our bodies. It can be done anywhere at any time so long as we feel safe enough to allow ourselves to access our tremors. For this reason, it can be used to help us release tension in a more ad hoc sort of fashion when we need it. Like before a big presentation, or after a tense conversation with someone, or when we’ve found ourselves getting triggered by some thing incidental. Personally, I find that sometimes just a few minutes of TRE® help me feel more grounded, more present, and more clear-headed about something which I might find stressful or agitating.

The choice of how often and with whom is, in other words, a very personal one and is usually tailored by the individual to meet their own needs. Some of us need a regular appointment set by an external entity to help us stay regular in our practice. Some of us prefer a more social environment and feel safer with a group. Some of us go through phases, even, of wanting to shake more often because life happens.

How often do I need to practice TRE® anyway, with or without a group or provision?

For beginners, a getting-to-know-you regular practice is ideal.

For beginners who are just starting to develop their relationships with their bodies with TRE®, a regular practice can be helpful, simply to familiarize. Once or twice a week is great; do take time off in between to allow for an integration of what TRE® is helping your body to process. The clearing and integration can go on for a few days, which is why some people find that a day or two after doing TRE®, they might feel more emotional, or perhaps feel more thirsty or tired, or even that they have differently vivid dreams. Some might even become more achy in some parts because, chances are, those are the parts that they were subconsciously not allowing to tremor: when you’ve spent most of your life not allowing yourself to tremor, chances are, you’ll need a little time to change that habit.

Also, when you do TRE®, you’re not just practicing how to allow, regulate and integrate your shake. You’re also practicing observing your body: What’s tremoring today, what’s not tremoring today, what feels like it would like to start tremoring, how much tremoring is feeling like enough for this session, how changing my breathing or taking time to stretch or having more breaks affects my shake… The more you practice watching and listening to your body, the more your body will start communicating with you so that eventually you’ll know when your body really needs to shake something off, and how to regulate your shake for different occasions.

Until that internal communication becomes more clear, you might want to set a timer for each practice you do on your own (say, 15 minutes, max) and set yourself a target for how many breaks you’ll take to just stretch out and lie still while you notice how your shake is going. Explore. Grow. And if you feel uncertain, find someone to ask.

Most importantly, whatever I or anyone else has to say on the matter: the TRE® journey is about your relationship with your body and the whole system that includes your mind, your emotions, your habituated tendencies, and anything else that you have stored in there. For that reason, you are the boss of your own journey and how you want that to progress. Taking time to find a Provider you feel gives you the support you need can be helpful – chances are, you’ll find that different Providers and the way they hold space will help you discover different things about yourself. Or simply taking the time to do a few minutes of TRE® every couple of days to get familiar because that’s what you’re comfortable with for a start.

As with any relationship, the more attention you put in, the more astute a sense you will develop for what suits and what doesn’t suit your needs.

What is TRE®?

What is TRE® and
how does it work?

In a nutshell, the TRE® process involves doing a set of exercises designed by Dr. David Berceli which target primarily the psoas muscle. The objective is to induce this muscle to tremor, initially by use of a combination of tiring and stretching the muscles in the target area, and then by using postures which introduce an element of instability. However, once a neurogenic tremor is accessed – this means the tremor is involuntary and not induced by conscious manipulation of the muscles – and the body becomes familiar with accessing it, the exercises are not necessary for bringing on the tremors. Practitioners are able to start and stop tremoring on their own.

Allowing the body to tremor is the means by which the body’s accumulated and stored stress – sometimes over years, particularly if there has been a traumatic experience in the practitioner’s part – can be discharged.

How does TRE® affect the system?

Physiologically, there can be both a release of muscle tension as well as a release of any stored naturally produced stress chemicals and hormones. This is why for many, the experience can create an experience of looseness and openness in the body, a feeling of being more physically relaxed after a session. The reduction of stress chemicals in the body can also promote better sleep. For assisting with flushing out whatever the TRE® session has helped release, all practitioners are advised to drink plenty of water after a session.

Mentally, many report feeling more grounded and aware of being present in their bodies (as opposed to having their minds mulling on the past or darting around about future issues) because in the process of experiencing the tremors, practitioners are guided to notice what is happening in their bodies, how the way they adjust their positions and use interventions can cause a change in their tremor experience and allow more parts of their bodies to experience tremoring. This groundedness can have an effect of helping people feel generally more calm, and helps create a better awareness around distinguishing being focused and being distracted.

There can also be a discharge of emotional stress during a TRE® session. Emotions which have been suppressed may be experienced during a shake though this varies from person to person, because individuals may also choose to regulate their experience by taking more breaks during their shake. The opportunity provided by the TRE® session to experience and be aware of these emotions when they emerge without the usual loaded trigger present can be very powerful for reconnecting with emotions as well as for allowing them to be expressed in a controlled and manageable fashion.

The possibility of suppressed emotions emerging is one of the reasons why beginners are encouraged to go through a period of supervised TRE® shakes in a group or 1-on-1 with a certified provider. The provider is there to provide support to ensure that the practitioner feels safe during the TRE® session, learns how to regulate their shake so that they can create a more optimum TRE® experience for themselves.

Dr. David Berceli

Scientist and Innovator who discovered the stress-discharging qualities of the tremor mechanism and who designed the exercises so that anyone can access the mechanism to improve their well-being.

An All-In-One Reset

A TRE® tremor session provides an opportunity for a physical, mental and emotional reset that helps us feel refreshed and restored to ourselves. For some, this ‘back to neutral’ state helps them access internal resources that were previously obstructed by stored stress, so that they can be more resilient in general.

Every Body Tremors Differently

And that is why we wanted to create different possibilities for exploration so that you can find the way to support your tremor and stress-discharging journey in the way that is the most supportive for you.

This is important to us because YOU are the greatest and most important intervention for all of your experiences.

Should anyone NOT practice TRE®?

For safety’s sake – after all, your safety is our #1 priority – here are some situations where, if you have not done TRE® before, you might want to wait before starting or to make sure that you are undertaking your TRE® experience with a provider to help you practice TRE® safely.

Post-Surgery

If you have had surgery recently, particularly abdominal surgery, you are advised to not start doing TRE® until either 6 months after OR your consulting doctor has given you the go-ahead to resume normal activities.

Immediately after an Accident

Though TRE® can be used to shake off the stresses of having had an accident, if you have been injured, you might want to proceed slowly and cautiously, paying great attention to which parts of your body are ready to discharge stress and tension.

If you are not sure or simply want more support, have a provider present for your shake.

If you are pregnant

Though there are TRE® practitioners who DO tremor during their pregnancies with no ill-effects, if you have never done TRE® before and do not have a baseline understanding of how your body responds to the experience, you are advised to wait until the baby is born before beginning your TRE® journey.

If you’re ready to start your TRE® journey, here are some things you might want to have on hand.

A Yoga or Exercise Mat

As the basic TRE® position requires you to lie down on the floor (see featured image), the mat is to provide you some cushioning. You may also use a futon or mattress if you have that available, though we do not recommend that you shake on an elevated plane (like on your bed) until you have enough experience with TRE® to know how to regulate your tremors and keep yourself safe from falling off mid-shake.

Water

We usually encourage practitioners to have some water immediately after the TRE® tremor session and integration are completed, to provide resource for flushing the body.

A Small Hand Towel

Though props are not generally necessary, a small hand towel can be used for a number of simple self-interventions during a TRE® session, so having one on hand can be helpful and provide more options for managing your experience.

What’s Next?

As with all somatic modalities and most other learning, the best way to get to know better what TRE® is and how it works is to get an experience of it. Every body is different and responds differently to TRE®, so come and discover the mystery that is you.
If you are a beginner, you can search for a START  session or a Beginner-Friendly TRE4Life GROUP session. Alternatively, if you would prefer some 1-on-1 attention because your own knowledge of your personal history makes you prefer to have a more private arrangement to begin your TRE® journey until you have a handle on how it affects your system – or if you simply have more questions that our FAQ page doesn’t help you with yet – get in touch with us!

Fantastic First Community Shake

Inaugural Community Shake of 2021

Yesterday, we had our first community TRE® shake for this year. Last year, we ran one for every full moon, from about May till December, but the shifting days were a bit disruptive for us.

So this year, we finally settled on running them on the last Sunday of every month. This way, we can plan our dates ahead, and anyone who would like to make a regular date with us for a group shake can too!

A Cosy Group

Given the short run up time from our announcement of the event, we had a rather small turn out, which made for a very cosy start of our series. It meant we had a chance to take the time to share where we were before the shake, set intentions for what we hoped to release during the shake and also to share where we found ourselves post-shake.

It felt incredibly safe and intimate and I think that affected the quality of shake I had myself.

We all found that we had each experienced something new or unexpected in our shake given the new context, and my shake had such a profound effect on me that I found myself knocked out an hour later! That hasn’t happened for a while!

How does your system respond differently when you do TRE® in a group to when you do your shake alone?

How the Session Ran

Our attendee was someone who hadn’t done very much TRE® previously, so I guided a short stretching session before we got into the tremoring to make sure that she could access the tremor experience.

I was also aware of keeping an eye on what was going on with her and keeping a conversation going so that she could feel safe to speak up, and also so that she have suggestions for different things she could try during her shake.

I learned that my body was willing and able to do some pretty cool things even though my mind was also focused onward. My spine went into a flex / stretch that felt marvellous and I also experienced a heat release from my sacrum at one point. And, like I said, a hour after the shake, my system knocked me out for a good 45 minutes  It was brilliant!

Today, my system is still in clearing mode with a runny nose, but I really felt connected with why I think having access to TRE® is so essential, and why having a routine of using it for self-care is so supportive for the wellness of our systems.

Help Us Serve The Community Better

If you would have liked to join us but found that our day and timing didn’t suit, we are open to considering a different timing or even running a different monthly group if there is enough interest. Please fill in the survey below to share your opinions with us. We appreciate any support we receive. All your responses will be kept confidential and will be used only for helping us refine our offers. Thank you!

9 Reasons We Love TRE®

So… What is TRE®?

And why do we love it so?

In my own words, TRE® is when we allow an innate mechanism in the body to discharge pent up tension and stress. The experience itself may emerge like shivers or tremoring, not unlike when it’s really cold and the body’s natural response kicks in to help warm things up. Objectively, Eric and I are keen advocates of TRE® because we have experienced that it…

1. Is 100% Organic

The process is about working with the body and what it was built to do all along, and we are all for sustained tension- and pain-relief without having to introduce chemicals or substances into our systems.

You lie down and let the tremors happen.

No chemicals, no fancy gadgets, no expensive equipment.

Nothing could be easier.

2. Helps Build Our Inner Trust Funds

In a world and time where volatility and uncertainty are key characteristics of the circumstances we find ourselves in, It is hard for us to hang on to any sense of certainty or confidence amidst the upheaval.

Practicing TRE® allows us to reaffirm with ourselves in an entirely visceral way that we can and do take care of ourselves.

3. Is Universally Accessible

So long as you have some body, any body – most preferably, your own body – you can do TRE®.

Since the capacity to do TRE® is something already built in, if you can follow some simple instructions for the exercises – and there are modifications which any provider can suggest for those of us who are built different or who have bodies that need more gentle loving care – to help with the initial access to the mechanism, ANYONE can do it.

I’ve seen my cat do it. And she doesn’t come when I call her name, much less follow instructions for exercises.

If she can do it, I can do it. If I can do it, you can do it. So let’s do it!

4. Empowers Us to Be Our Own Superheroes

The more choices we perceive, the more empowered we can feel, especially when we’re faced with challenging situations. And the truth of the matter is that when we have less stress, less tension and less pain in our systems – and that is exactly the effect doing TRE® has – it is easier for us to see a wider array of choices and to feel like we do have what it takes for dealing with what’s shown up in life.

Avengers: assemble…To watch me save my own day because I know I can!

5. Is A Personal Magic Carpet to A Whole New World

Not only does life look different when we are less stressed, but the experience of doing the TRE® itself opens up a whole new wonderland of self-discovery. All the movement we experience is voluntary yet managed, and when you start tuning in to how your body wants to be supported while it moves… That’s when the real fun begins!

So… Are you ready to have indescribable feelings and to be shown the wondrous place that is you, no Aladdin required?

6. Is An Ever-Ready Defence Against Stress

Though beginners are encouraged to go do a series of shakes with a group or a provider until they get the hang of how to start, stop and self-regulate, once you have those basics down, you can use TRE® any time and anywhere that you need it simply because your body is always going to be right there with you!

It helps me ground when I can see stress coming, and in times when the stress hits, it helps me take only a couple of minutes to get grounded again.

7. Is a whole lot of fun

Discovering how your body can move and all the ways it wants to move can feel a bit trippy.

Even better when we’re doing TRE® with others and we get to see how everyone has a different tremor and they maybe even tremor in ways we couldn’t imagine… Until our bodies get inspired by what we see!

Every shake can be a unique journey all of its own – you’ll be amazed at how much you can rock your own world in just ten minutes.

8. Reconnects Us To Ourselves and Others

The simple truth is that it is easier to be kind, compassionate and loving when we are in less pain and when we feel well cared for.

What kind of relationships would become possible if you could discover that you are capable of patience rather than tolerance, compassion rather than pity and love rather than resignation, anger or fear?

For that matter, how would you treat yourself if you had more patience, compassion and love to give? And why wouldn’t anyone want to have access to that every day?

9. Gives Us RESET Functionality

There is no reset button for life that allows us to start over when we find out where our choices have lead us.

TRE® fortunately allows us a way to help our bodies and systems to reset. By helping us discharge what the body has produced in times of stress, there is a perceivable calming impact on our emotional and mental states.

When I’m not lugging around a wagonload of stress and upset from having had a setback, I can pick myself up and try again.

To be honest, I had a different direction in mind for this post. I was going to write about my own journey to discovering TRE® and how a mandate in our household created an opportunity for a shared life mission with Eric. I guess that story is going to have to wait for another day.

Where TRE® is concerned though: Don’t take my word for it. Find someone to have a session with. Eric and I are rolling out a whole new exciting range of different ways to start and grow in your TRE® journey, though really, all we want for anybody is simply that they start and discover for themselves this wonderful new journey.

What new PLAY adventure have you brought yourself on lately?

This universe is not outside of you.

Look inside yourself;

Our First Season of PlayTRE4Life Sessions

What is out there?

The mystery of YOU, awaiting  discovery.

Are you ready?

Have fun learning about you

I got the idea for because of a regular Provider group which Eric and I have been hosting since last year and how we always encourage each other to explore, only there is no particular system we follow. Each week, we take turns to hold space for the group and everyone brings a little something.

It made me think: I want everyone to have a chance to explore their own systems this way. Isn’t this part of what we want to do with TRE® anyway, to learn more about how our systems work and to support it to do what it does best so that we can be the best version of ourselves?

So then I thought: Why not?  Why not PLAY and encourage others to take time to engage in play with their own systems?

From a teacher’s perspective, play is actually the ideal learning platform. When we play, we can discover so much about ourselves because when we play, we want to explore, we want to try, we aren’t afraid to fail, and we know that even if things don’t turn out the way we thought, we can always try again. When we play, we can dare to be more open, more hopeful, more curious, more willing to be surprised.

I know that when I play, I experience all of these, and I also give myself a chance to experience the joy of simply being tremendously present to where I am and what I am doing.

It was a great revelation to me that in this joy of being present, I feel incredibly safe. I know that I have all that I need for the moment and that, amazingly, is truly enough. And when I feel that safe, magic happens. My system opens up and shows me new things it wants to try because perhaps there is something that has been stuck a long time that I’ve been struggling to release, or sometimes there is something there which I haven’t felt willing to admit to because I’ve been afraid of being censured or judged by the worst judge of all: myself. I have experienced that the safer I feel within myself – and in play I feel very safe because I tell my inner judge to go and have a coffee break somewhere else because this is my time to be however I want to be – the more open I become to exploring and to discovering what it is I need to heal myself and to really let go of stress and tension that has been hanging about inside me.

With , I want nothing so much as for it to be a program which nurtures people’s curiosity about themselves while also being a time that they can experience as a gift to themselves because, perhaps for the first time in their lives, people might be opening to just slowing down and being with and listening to different parts of their systems that work hard every day – invisibly to us because we simply expect that it all just works – to keep us going.

I want these to be journeys of love, of falling in love with each and every part of us so that we know deeply how it feels to recognise and be integrally connected with the WHOLE of us.

So if you’re ready to fall in love with all of you, come join me on this adventure because

LIFE IS A JOURNEY AND HAVING FUN IS A PART OF IT!

Community Shakes 2021

TRE4Life Community Shakes 2021

That’s right!

Last year, around this time, we decided to start hosting free Full Moon Shakes for TRE® Providers to get together, shake together and support each other through a stressful year.

This year we want to make the offer even bigger: so long as you know TRE® and are comfortable to self-regulate, come and do a shake with us!

We want to support your self-care

In the wake of the ineffability of 2020, remembering to take care of ourselves so that we can bolster our own capacity for resilience and to be there for those who need us is more important than ever. Things are still uncertain and while there is hope on the horizon, for many of us, the light at the end of the tunnel might still feel a bit far off to be heaving sighs of relief just yet.

That is why we want to offer again this year to host a space for anyone who wants a timeout, a safe space to be with others who are also open, caring, empathic individuals; a time when there is no pressure and no expectations beyond respecting that you are taking time to take care of yourself while knowing that you’re among kindred spirits.

This year, we’re making it easier for everyone to remember when our sessions run by having them on every last Sunday of each calendar month at the same time:

SG (GMT+8) 5pm

The person who always has the power to change your life is the one who looks back at you from the mirror each morning.

Take care of that person, always.

Flow of a Session

1

Brief Meet-N-Greet & Intention Setting

We would like to encourage networking and connecting between all practitioners of TRE® and so we want to give you a chance to introduce yourself briefly and to perhaps state the intention you wish to declare for your shake session.

2

A 20-minute Timed Shake

Eric and I will provide the timing frame for the session and occasional time check-ins, but no provision beyond that.
If the group is open to it on that day, we might encourage in-shake sharing about what we notice is happening with our systems, or perhaps something we feel moved to try. We might also use music for some sessions… Who knows? We’re open to letting the feel of the group dictate the session!

3

3-min Integration

Eric or I will time a 3-minute integration in silence so that you can be sure to have time to let your system settle and for you to check in with what has shifted during the session.

4

Sharing Reflections &
Self-Acknowledgement

As practitioners of TRE®, we know that giving the words to our experience can be important as part of integration and in support of whatever our system has brought up for processing, so we want to make sure there is time for this. We also want to remind everyone that acknowledging ourselves for showing up for our own self-care is also important!

Supporting the First Ever Global TRE® Advanced Training (Online)

Open to New Possibilities

We had an interesting beginning to the New Year. We were approached by our TRE® Trainer who is also on the Board of Directors for TRE® for All to make a voluntary contribution of our time for the TRE® Advanced Training Online which ran in February this year. The details that lead up to the request are not for me to divulge, but Eric and I thought that it would be a good opportunity to get to know more people from the TRE® community as well as to provide our support for the sharing and development of TRE®, so we said “yes”.

Learning at a run

The work turned out to be quite a bit more challenging than we had initially thought, including having to learn how to edit a website which had been set up in a way which was unfamiliar to us in addition to having to help registrants sort out payment related matters and deal with questions which we didn’t always have the answers for simply because it took time for information and decisions by the board to trickle down to us.

I can’t speak for Eric, but it was a steep learning curve for me, especially the more technical aspects of the work. And as the course date drew closer, it seemed like everything intensified because many people were keen to attend the workshop. In the end, the initial target we had been set turned out to be modest because we had about 300 sign ups.

It was an amazing experience to get to be a part of the bringing of the event together, and we were fortunate to have great support in terms of the people from the board whom we were able to turn to for help, as well as from the original organizers of the event when it had been planned as an on-site event before Covid-19 had forced a change of plans.

Finally, it was time to attend the workshop itself and it didn’t disappoint. Apart from the featured speakers, Dr. David Berceli, Dr. Stephen Porges and Dr. Sue Carter, there were many other experienced TRE® community trainers and providers who stepped up to share what they had been practicing in their communities, and it was tremendously enriching to watch and listen to everyone.

Some of my key takeaways from the whole experience include:

®

The 2021 TRE® Online Advanced Training ran from 13 – 16 February this year, and we hope they will run a similar event again because we learnt so much from attending!

While it didn’t require any kind of tech genius to make it happen, I’m proud of having been able to contribute the schedule poster for the event. The coloured table below were the time zones for participants to have an easier time (hopefully) getting a sense of when the workshops would be running live for where they were.

The most important thing is
to be present to the being that is in front of you.

While there is some solid science behind our ability to co-regulate and to vibrationally affect the spaces that we occupy, there is something exceptionally powerful about being in the space of someone who has allowed you to be a witness to what they are going through and what they are processing, and it is similarly powerful for you to let them know that you see them, you receive them and you are there for them.

It is the whole WHY of my choosing to become a coach, a TRE® provider, a CST therapist;
it is part of why teaching is still a passion for me even though I want to explore teaching new things in a new way in this phase of my life.

If, right here, right now, I was present to the being in front of me, what joy, what wonder,
would I be giving myself the chance to experience?

Grounding myself by keeping the bigger picture in view.

There were so many challenges along the way, some of them technical, some of them human and some of them simply emerging from within as old things got triggered and brought to the surface to let me know they were still there.

And when at one point things had taken an unexpected turn and Eric and I were presented an opportunity to tap out, we decided that we would stick with it because of the bigger picture.

And the bigger picture that really grounded me more than anything wasn’t that the event was happening right the next week or even that if we stepped out, someone would have to scramble to fill the gap, but that these are the choices that make up the journey of our souls, all our souls together toward becoming more wise, more the versions of ourselves that we work hard every day to get closer to being. And on that journey, I wasn’t about to give up on myself or on what I knew I could do to make things happen.

What would life be if I took care to remind myself to be grounded in this knowing all the time?

What we need is to live by love, not fear

There was a whole segment of content that was entirely about the kinds of hormones / chemicals / molecules that our bodies produce which create different kinds of effects under stress of when we are calm and open to bonding. And while I was listening I thought: how very interesting because I have been on a journey to explore how I could live more from love rather than fear and what that means, and to hear how much it shows up in our bio-chemistry – that human connection is what makes co-regulation possible and keeps people safe during TRE® sessions and helps with people feeling safe enough, supported enough to start processing what they need to process anyway. It was what makes us open to healing ourselves, and when we feel confident that we can heal ourselves, we believe even more that we can heal our communities.

Sitting and listening and then doing the TRE® shakes with the community for the sessions we managed to attend live (some of the US timings were less than ideal for us here in Singapore) and feeling that connection, that sense of community despite not really knowing anyone, it really made me wonder:
Really, is loving so hard?

What kind of a world would I be helping to create if I could just be a little more open to love today, enough to heal even a small part of myself? And what if, having experienced that healing, I perhaps come to the conclusion that I have the courage to love a little more after all?

I am grateful that we had the opportunity to participate in the way that we did, to not merely attend but to be involved in helping to bring the event together, to close the gap and to feel that we contributed to an amazing event.

More than that, although Eric and I had already formulated the idea of , I really felt my creativity get a kick in the butt after the training: I knew better what I wanted to do and what I wanted us to be able to offer, not just to certified TRE® Providers but to all people who need some TRE® to help them heal and to help them cope, people who want to explore what TRE® – and their systems – could be. Much of the clarity that we arrived at came by way of this burst of creativity, and we are excited to move forward and bring what we have to everyone!
